The IOPC said Tom Whiting’s departure will be “a loss to policing and its stakeholders”.

Mr Whiting joined the IOPC in February 2019 as the Deputy Director General, Strategy and Corporate Services, and was appointed Acting Director General in December 2022.

At the IOPC, he was committed to building effective relationships internally and externally with the ultimate vision of “everyone being able to have trust and confidence in the police”.

Commenting on Mr Whiting’s appointment, the IOPC’s Senior Independent Director Julia Mulligan said: “Congratulations to Tom Whiting on his appointment as Chief Executive and Registrar of the General Dental Council.

“This is a prestigious appointment and Tom’s success is testament to his talent, knowledge and abilities.

“We have benefited greatly from his exceptional leadership as Acting Director General over the past 16 months and he leaves us with a stronger IOPC that is ready to navigate the challenges of the future.

“His departure is a loss to the IOPC – and to policing and its stakeholders – but he leaves with our warmest wishes for the future. The GDC can be sure they have made the right choice.”
