PC ‘let himself down’ in car crash cover-up

An officer has been sacked after lying to protect his uninsured brother from being prosecuted over a car crash. Police Constable Miladur Khan was jailed for six months in May after admitting perverting the course of justice at Southwark Crown Court. The 30-year-old, who was attached to the Metropolitan Police Service’s (MPS) East Area Command, had been in the passenger seat of a car driven by his brother Mured during a collision last June. He repeatedly claimed that he had been driving at the time of the crash as Mured Khan did not have car insurance. The deception was uncovered when the MPS retrieved CCTV footage of the incident from the Tower Hamlets local authority. A recent misconduct hearing heard PC Khan breached standards of professional behaviour in three areas. Hearing chair Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley found the allegations were proven and dismissed PC Khan without notice. Mr Rowley said: “This officer has let himself, his family and his colleagues down. “Our communities expect the highest standards of integrity from our officers and in this case the officer failed to meet these standards. “I found the only suitable sanction was dismissal without notice.” Mured Khan was found guilty of driving without insurance at a trial in April. He was banned from driving for six months and was fined £200.
