Force welcome new assistant chief constable

Jen Mattinson took up her post as the new assistant chief constable at West Midlands Police on Monday (December 4) and will lead on the crime portfolio.

Ms Mattinson has 22 years’ service and started her police career with West Mercia Police in 2001 before transferring to Staffordshire Police on promotion to superintendent in March 2018.

She has worked in a variety of roles, including public protection, local policing, crime and change management.

While in Staffordshire, Ms Mattinson led a change programme to deliver a new police records management system, as well as performing the role of Silver commander for the force’s Covid-19 response.

She also led the local partnership approach to safeguarding throughout the pandemic period.

In September 2021, she was appointed temporary assistant chief constable leading a significant programme of work to deliver improvements to child protection arrangements. This work was a precursor to a larger project to design a new operating model for the whole of the force’s Public Protection Unit.

As well as her day-to-day role, Ms Mattinson chaired the Evidence Based Practice and Innovation Board, as well as performing the role of regional coordinator for research and innovation within the West Midlands area – a position dedicated to delivering on the national Science and Technology Strategy.
