The male officer was injured at about 4.50am on Sunday (18 October) after approaching the pair in Angel Row. The suspects, a man and a woman, fled the scene and remain outstanding.

The officer remains in hospital in a stable condition. A firearm has been recovered and detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

A heightened police presence will remain in the area while officers carry out enquiries and seek information from potential witnesses.

Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas said the incident had been “deeply shocking” and acknowledged its impact on members of the public who witnessed it.

She also thanked those who came to the officer’s aid before additional emergency responders arrived.

“The injured officer continues to be treated in hospital and our thoughts remain with the officer involved, their family, friends and colleagues at this time,” she said.

The force said experienced detectives were making progress with their enquiries and working to identify those responsible.

ACC Rukas sought to reassure people who live, work and visit Nottingham city centre, saying there was currently no information to suggest a wider threat to the public.

Officers will remain in the area to provide reassurance and speak to anyone with concerns, the force added.

The incident prompted messages of support for the injured officer from local representatives and policing organisations.

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome said she hoped the officer would make a full and speedy recovery, while the Police Federation of England and Wales highlighted the dangers officers face while protecting the public.
