Officer mulls quitting after brick attacker freed days after sentencing

A Lancashire police officer who was struck in the face by a brick thrown through his car window says he is reconsidering his career after the man jailed for the attack was released from prison just 16 days after sentencing.

PC Conor McIntyre was left with facial lacerations, a chipped tooth and glass embedded in his eye after the attack in Morecambe in November 2025.

His attacker, George Jacobs, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and criminal damage at Preston Crown Court and was sentenced in April to 15 months imprisonment, plus five months already served on remand. Jacobs has 70 previous offences on his record.

PC McIntyre said the early release was “a real kick in the teeth” that had given him “no confidence in the justice system.”

Lancashire Police Federation Chair Martin Midgley said the case highlighted a wider problem: 48,888 officers were assaulted across the UK in the past year — an average of 134 every day. “If you assault a police officer,” he said, “there should be no early release from prison.”
