In a statement a spokesperson for the agency said: “We are aware of a number of threatening emails being sent to schools and are investigating alongside partners. We understand that these types of emails can be distressing and while we take the communications extremely cautiously, we must stress there is no credible threat.”

In early March NCA officers arrested a 19-year-old man in Watford on suspicion of blackmail and making malicious communications. The man allegedly sent out hoax bomb threats that led to the closure of hundreds of schools across the UK. An 18-year-old man was arrested on a similar offence at the end of March.

It is not known whether the threats issued this morning are linked to the same individuals.
