Lincolnshire DOCO recognised for crime and suicide prevention work
A Lincolnshire Police Designing Out Crime Officer has received a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to crime prevention and suicide prevention.
John Manuel received the ATLAS Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Secured by Design ATLAS conference, recognising his work over a career as a Designing Out Crime Officer (DOCO).
Manuel has developed specialist expertise in suicide prevention, particularly in identifying ways that the design and management of buildings and other locations can reduce the risk of suicide.
He has advised police forces and other organisations on suicide prevention measures at car parks, locations at height and other potentially vulnerable sites.
His work has included providing specialist advice to Humberside Police concerning suicide prevention at a prominent bridge on a major road network. Despite being based in another force area, Manuel attended site visits and subsequently provided advice through reports and meetings.
He has also contributed to continuing professional development sessions for other DOCOs and provided advice through the Problem Solvers Network. Within Lincolnshire Police, he has advised on suicide prevention measures at car parks and other locations where people may be at risk.
Manuel said he was “surprised and honoured” to receive the award. “I am an absolute believer in the value of the evolving role of the DOCO and the contributions that they provide to the reduction of crime and disorder, and equally in making the built environment safe and secure,” he said.
The award was presented by Police CPI chief executive Guy Ferguson and South Yorkshire Chief Constable Lauren Poultney.
DOCOs provide specialist crime prevention advice on the design and security of buildings and public spaces, working with police, local authorities, architects and developers to identify ways of reducing crime and improving safety.
