This enables call handers to provide an improved victim experience, while the AI assistant records important information and carries out key background searches.

Funded by the Police Digital Service (PDS) and the Office of Policing Chief Scientific Adviser, the ‘proof of concept’ focuses on domestic abuse calls.

The PDS says it marks “a significant step forward in modern policing contact management”.

The system has highlighted its potential by interoperating with national policing data sources such as the Police National Computer. The collaboration between police forces, technology experts, and the PDS has paved the way for a more efficient and responsive emergency services infrastructure, the force says.

Commenting on the project’s success, Scot Dunn, head of IT at Humberside and South Yorkshire Police, said: “We are immensely proud of the strides we have made in integrating AI into our emergency response systems for domestic abuse calls.

“This fast-paced project not only showcases our commitment to innovation but also our dedication to providing the best possible service to the public.

“We are eager to collaborate with our partners and the wider community to ensure the responsible and effective implementation of AI in policing.””

Regarding the project’s findings, a spokesperson for PDS stated: “The project has demonstrated promising outcomes, highlighting the feasibility and potential sustainability of integrating AI into policing processes.

“We are actively engaging with strategic partners, including the Home Office, to explore wider implementations and engage with diverse communities for ethical and responsible AI usage.”

The PDS says the collaboration with AI technology provider Untrite has been “instrumental in developing innovative solutions tailored to the unique demands of emergency services”.

“This partnership exemplifies the successful constructive collaboration between law enforcement agencies and innovative tech companies, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and adaptive technology integration,” it added.

Moving forward, the PDS said it is working alongside Humberside and other forces to further explore the utilisation of AI within the wider landscape of contact management to operationalise the benefits identified within this proof of concept.
