GMP officer to face assault charge over Taser use

An officer from Greater Manchester Police will appear before Preston Magistrates’ Court today (August 13) to face charges of assault in connection with his use of a Taser during an incident in June 2018.

Police Constable Phillip Smith had attended an address in Dukinfield following reports concerning the welfare of a 29-year-old man.

Following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, evidence was presented to the Crown Prosecution Service, which made the decision to charge the officer with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
