Former GMP officer jailed for helping criminal associate evade police

PC Tubah Hamid, 25, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court after being convicted of three counts of misconduct in public office, four counts of computer misuse and an offence relating to the illegal transmission of communications from a prison.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said Hamid had been in a relationship with a man involved in the supply of Class A drugs and had provided him with information to help him avoid police detection and surveillance.

Between December 2021 and June 2022, she shared confidential intelligence without lawful justification.

She also used police computer systems to search for four individuals between October 2021 and March 2022. At least two of those people were subsequently contacted by Hamid, with no apparent legitimate policing purpose for the searches.

During the investigation, Hamid was also observed travelling in a car with her associate despite having told GMP she was off sick and unable to work.

The vehicle was later approached by another man, from whom officers subsequently recovered cocaine.

Messages recovered during the investigation showed Hamid’s associate was concerned that he was under police surveillance. Hamid assisted him by providing information about how to detect surveillance, including changing his routes.

She was sentenced to three years for the misconduct in public office offences, with four months for computer misuse and four months for the prison communications offence, both to run concurrently.

The IOPC said its investigation had been directed by the watchdog’s Anti-Corruption Unit following a referral from GMP in January 2022.

IOPC director of engagement Amanda Rowe said Hamid’s actions had been a “complete betrayal” of the public’s trust.

She said the case demonstrated that officers who abused their position to assist criminal activity could face serious consequences.
