Police Scotland seeks victims of officer who died during rape inquiry
An officer from Police Scotland who died while suspended and under criminal investigation, is believed to have carried out multiple rapes, violent sexual assaults and one attempted murder over at least 14 years.
Alan Greer, 47, was arrested on 24 April 2026 after Anti-Corruption Unit officers searched a property in Wishaw.
He was identified after a woman reported that an officer who had attended her Glasgow home in 2012 returned alone hours later and raped her. Anti-corruption detectives traced repeated, unexplained checks on her crime file back to Greer, and searched his home. Devices seized during the raid led to the identification of eight further victims, five of them sex workers.
Greer was released without charge pending further investigation and suspended from duty. Officers were called to the same property on 6 May, where he was found dead. He is believed to have taken his own life.
His death is now the subject of a Crown-directed investigation by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.
Assistant Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliff described it as one of the largest and most complex enquiries the unit has undertaken, and said the investigation was about giving victims a voice and establishing the full circumstances.
She described the findings as truly shocking, but said no opportunities to identify Greer earlier had been missed. She urged further victims to come forward.
