More than 100 delegates attended the weekend event at Police Scotland headquarters, Tulliallan.

The two-day event offered learning opportunities for all police volunteers with presentations from leading academics in the field of volunteering.

The conference is one of three local, national and international seminars taking place throughout May.

Ms Farrell said: “Events like today are important opportunities to recognise and reflect on the excellent work our volunteers deliver and I pay tribute to everyone who gives of themselves to help their communities and keep people safe.

“I want our Special Constables to know they are valued and ensure the role is as rewarding as they deserve it to be. They are incredible people and provide significant contribution to service delivery. Last year alone, they dedicated more than 58,000 volunteering hours across 8,500 shifts.”

The chief constable added: “Since taking command, I have been clear on my commitment to support our volunteering constabulary.

“I want to create more opportunity and more endeavour around supporting volunteering colleagues and encourage people to become Special Constables, perhaps in more specialist areas of business, as a route into policing and for those who are community-minded who want to work alongside us and do the best for their local communities.

“Volunteering is rooted in kindness. It is a highly principled and selfless act where people have a desire to give back and support others and I am humbled by the dedication they demonstrate.

“I thank all our volunteers for stepping forward and for giving up their own time to work with us in keeping Scotland safe.”
