Design details for the proposed new Greater Manchester Police (GMP) headquarters were submitted for planning approval last week.

Significant work has taken place to ensure the relocation plan meets operational policing needs in the most cost effective way and that GMP staff and officers affected by the relocation are being fully involved.

Work to relocate GMP headquarters began after the current tower block – Chester House – was deemed to have reached the end of its economical life. In 2006/7, the maintenance costs of the building were almost three times the industry norm for a building of its size.

The cost of relocation, if it is approved by planners and the Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA), will be in the region of £60 million, to be funded by the GMPA and a government grant.

The GMPA will only be legally committed to the development if the full business case is approved by the authority in the spring.
