Man shot in police operation

The IPCC has launched an independent investigation after a man was shot by armed officers in Birmingham. West Midlands Police officers discharged a firearm at around 9pm on Wednesday (July 26) resulting in one man being injured. The man was taken to hospital for treatment and a second was arrested for suspected firearms offences. The incident is the first time someone has been shot by West Midlands Police officers since June 2000. The IPCC has already secured a police firearm and gathered body-worn video footage to review. Investigators believe a single shot was fired by one officer. IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “We will be carrying out a thorough, independent investigation into this serious incident, as is appropriate when police use potentially lethal force. “We are making contact with the man’s family and will ensure they are updated on the progress of our investigation.”
