Moped driver in critical condition following tactical stop

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has launched an investigation after a teenager was injured during the tactical stop of a moped. A 17-year-old male was taken to hospital by Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officers in the early hours of Tuesday morning (November 7) as no ambulance crews were available. He remains in a critical condition and his next of kin have been informed. The force said the tactical stop on his moped was authorised after he was spotted riding dangerously in Bexley, south-east London, with a pillion passenger. A spokesperson added: “At around 01.20am, officers identified a moped with pillion passenger being driven dangerously in Eastern Way, SE28. “Upon sighting police, the pillion passenger got off the moped and fled on foot. “In the interests of other road users, public safety and the safety of the rider, a tactical stop of the moped was authorised. “The rider of the moped – a 17-year-old male – was injured during the course of this tactical stop.” The Directorate of Professional Standards was informed of the incident. It has now been referred it to the IPCC.
