An Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation has been launched after a fatal collision following a police pursuit. Metropolitan Police Service officers tried to stop 24-year-old Relando Tekle-Giorgies in Harrow on December 29 but their request was ignored. The officers began a pursuit which ended when Mr Tekle-Giorgies failed to stop, during which time he sped away from the patrol car. When they caught up with Mr Tekle-Giorgies’ Peugeot 206, they found it crashed into parked cars on Kenton Road. First aid was administered but Mr Tekle-Giorgies died at the scene. Investigators from the IOPC have attended the scene and collected video evidence. They have also seized in-vehicle data from the police car involved in the pursuit and have taken witness accounts. An IOPC spokesperson said the officers are being treated as witnesses at this time. IOPC regional director Jonathan Green said: “This is a tragic incident where a young man has lost his life and my thoughts are with his family and friends and all those affected. “The investigation is progressing but I would ask that anyone who saw any part of the incident should contact us as soon as possible to assist in our investigation.”
