Lancashire Constabulary has taken a step towards modernisation as it introduces lightweight baseball caps to replace traditional custodian helmets.

Officers will now wear the hardened caps – which have a level of protection built in much like a cycle helmet – as part of a uniform update, including a change to black shirts, jackets and body armour.

The traditional custodian helmet will now be reserved for ceremonial purposes.

The force insists the unisex caps are more practical for officers and allow them to undertake the “modern and complex demands placed upon them”.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary said: “The baseball cap is part of an updated and more practical police uniform being issued to all officers. This includes a new soft shell black jacket, black body armour, lightweight high-vis jacket and new black shirts.

“This will see us move away from the traditional custodian helmets and flat hats issued to all male officers and bowler hats for female officers.

“Whilst such a move away from tradition will inevitably invoke mixed reactions we have worked hard to provide what we believe is the best operational kit whilst realising significant financial savings year on year.

“We will maintain a small stock of traditional headwear for men and women for ceremonial purposes.”

Following Morecambe Police’s announcement of the new headgear on Twitter, some people criticised its ‘unprofessional’ look.

Lee Hayes said: “I’m not too pleased about it. It’s far, far too casual. You need to express a demeanour of authority.”

Rebecca Connelly added: “I think the caps will not show a professional image. I wouldn’t wear a cap to an interview or work, but a smart beret would be more appropriate or flat cap (such as the one you are retiring) is more suited.”

Lancashire Constabulary is not the first force to introduce the modern look to its officers. Cheshire Police rolled out baseball caps to officers in May 2016 following successful trials in Northwich and Chester.

The public was consulted on Cheshire Police’s change via social media, and 72 per cent of respondents agreed the new caps would be more practical for officers.
