The ‘Control Wand’ is a revolutionary traffic control device for police officers released by Northern Ireland entrepreneur Darren Fenton last month.
It essentially works on the principle of traffic light colours, making it easy for a driver to understand what a police officer wants them to do.
The Control Wand is an aluminium-body torch with a removable plastic wand. The plastic wand changes colour between red (stop) and green (go) at the push of a button – perfect for vehicle checkpoints and RTAs.
It also contains a standard LED torch which is detachable, allowing it to be used independently.
All lights are powered by 1W LEDS and AAA batteries are used to keep the product as small as possible. Best of all, it is stored in a small pouch on the officer’s belt meaning that it’s always close to hand.
Since its launch, the product has been  undergoing trials by several UK police forces, including Northamptonshire, Surrey, Essex and Humberside. It has also generated interest from distributors in the US, Canada, Australia, Africa, Spain and Holland.
Mr Fenton, Control Wand managing director, said: “The product really is going to change the way police officers control traffic and reduce confusion for the driver, which will hopefully make it safer for the officer.”
The product has many benefits for the officer and aims to reduce the amount of equipment carried.
It is the aim of Control Wand Ltd that the product will be used around the world and therefore be the standard method of stopping and signalling to cars – so that no matter where in the world the driver is from, they are clear about the officer’s intentions.
It is also suitable for the Army, fire departments and customs officials. To meet the needs of other customers, two further versions of Control Wand have been released – red and yellow lights for airplane marshalling and flashing red and white for motorists needing assistance in breakdown situations.
