Northumbria Police has turned to woodcraft to curb anti-social behaviour from youths in a Gateshead wood.

The latest initiative stemmed from youngsters causing persistent problems in Chopwell Wood – damage caused from building dens, litter left behind and arson resulting from lighting bonfires were among the recurring problems.

Partnering with the Forestry Commission and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Northumbria Police came up with the idea of creating a designated social area for youths within the woods, with the youths partly responsible for its development and upkeep.

The youngsters have been given advice on woodcraft and safe construction and entered into an agreement whereby the building of a den and its continued existence in Chopwell Wood is subject to their responsible behaviour.

West Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Keith Middleton, said: “Residents had to put up with a lot of noise and litter, while some areas were being destroyed by youths who would leave beer cans and bottles lying around or cause damage by setting fires.

“We identified a few of the youths involved in anti-social behaviour and asked if they would like to become involved in a project in the forest. They were very quick to volunteer. Helped by Hookergate Comprehensive School, more volunteers came forward and there was a real desire to create a youth space within the woods.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service Watch Manager, Kevin Burns, said: “Fire-fighters have made several visits to Chopwell Wood to spend time talking to youths to make them aware of the dangers of camp fires and how easily carelessly discarded cigarettes can have devastating results. Since the start of the initiative there has been a substantial drop in the number of fires and disorder incidents.”

Head forester Mark Herbertson said it was giving local youths a creative outlet for their energies while allowing others to enjoy the stunning woodland environment in peace.
