An officer has been sacked for trying to beat a confession out of a suspect with a shoe as another two others were dismissed for lying about the incident.

A disciplinary hearing ruled that Detective Constable Chris Hanson beat Lee Stott while he was handcuffed in an attempt to find out the location of a car that Stott had stolen the previous night.

The South Yorkshire Police officer denied any wrongdoing and Stott admitted he “might have dreamt” the incident, but the hearing was told that Stott had injuries consistent with being hit with a shoe.

Two other officers – PCs Chris Cheung and Trevor Roberts – were also dismissed for lying about what happened in their statements.

Stott pleaded guilty to burglary in February 2015. He is currently in prison.

CCTV footage seen by the disciplinary panel showed the officers forcing entry to Stott’s flat on August 30, 2014.

They had initially claimed that Stott’s girlfriend had opened the door for them.

Det Con Hanson admitted at the hearing that they had forced entry, but claimed to have omitted this fact from his statement as he did not consider it relevant.

He added that Stott’s ‘defensive injuries’ had been caused by the suspect rubbing his handcuffs together.

Neil Bowles, from South Yorkshire Police Federation, said that the three officers plan to appeal against the panel’s ruling.

He said: “They are disgusted at the decision and disappointed – and they have got to face their families.”

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “All three officers were dismissed. All of the allegations against them were found to be proven.”
