TASER International, the leading supplier of professional taser equipment, is now moving into the personal protection market with the launch of their TASER C2 Personal Protection device.

Tom Smith, chairman of TASER International Inc, said: “The TASER C2 provides next generation technology incorporated a revolutionary new public safety background check called SureCheck screening.”

With SureCheck testing, TASER C2 units are shipped in an inactivated state. They cannot be used until the end user successfully completes a background certification using a secure website. After completing the background screening, the user is issued an activation code unique to their serial number. The TASER C2 can only be operated after entering the activation code.

“SureCheck is one way TASER International is ensuring that our devices are properly used for self-protection. The TASER C2 cartridge also continues to include our proven Anti-Felon Identification (AFID) program that disperses 20-30 serialized confetti whenever a TASER Cartridge is deployed identifying the owner of the TASER system. Our unique AFID system has proved successful in deterring criminal use for the past 13 years,” said Mr Smith.

Prices for the TASER C2 start at $299. The package includes the TASER C2, a smaller and newly designed disposable TASER Cartridge, and training DVD. The TASER C2 has a 15-foot range and is available with or without integrated laser sight. First shipments are scheduled for April 2007.

The use of TASER technology has had a chequered history in the UK. But with personal safety once again highlighted during the Suffolk sex worker murders, devices like the TASER C2 could find their way into the UK. Whether legislation would be required for police any deployment of what could fall under the current firearm regulations remains to be seen.
