SYP officer charged with assault of 16-year-old football fan
An officer from South Yorkshire Police has been charged with assaulting a 16-year-old boy during a football match between Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday in February.
Police Constable William Sampson, aged 26, will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on December 2 following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Footage widely shared on social media at the time showed the injured youth bleeding on the pavement with a large gash on his head. The footage prompted the IOPC investigation.
A statement from the IOPC said it completed its investigation in August and referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which made the decision to charge PC Sampson.
