South Yorkshire Police has confirmed the appointment of Ingrid Lee as the force’s new assistant chief constable.

Ms Lee, who is temporary assistant chief constable at West Yorkshire Police, will become the first woman in the force to fill the role and will take up her position in August.

She joined West Yorkshire Police in 1985 serving within the Bradford District. Since that time she has worked in predominantly investigative roles at all ranks across West Yorkshire, specialising in serious and organised crime.

Between 2000 and 2004, Ms Lee served as a detective inspector and detective chief inspector in the National Crime Squad covering the north east and north west of the country.

In 2004 she returned to West Yorkshire Police as a crime manager within Bradford before moving in 2006 to detective chief inspector operations in the drugs and organised crime division.

By 2007 she had been promoted to detective superintendent operations where she has led a number of high-profile investigations.

In 2010 Ms Lee was promoted to the head of crime where she led a number of complex investigations including counter corruption, serious and organised crime and the force response to child sexual exploitation.

Chief Constable David Crompton welcomed Ms Lee to South Yorkshire.

“Her wealth of knowledge in specialist areas of policing will be an excellent addition to the force.”

Police and crime commissioner Shaun Wright said: “Ingrid will be an excellent addition to an already strong team.

“Like all forces, South Yorkshire Police has many challenges ahead and I feel confident that Ingrid will help lead her specific areas of the force through those challenges effectively.”

Ms Lee said: “I’m really excited about this opportunity to join South Yorkshire Police’s senior command team and work with them and the wider organisation.”

Ms Lee replaces Max Sahota, who will join the College of Policing.
