A senior Thames Valley Police officer has been arrested on suspicion of insurance fraud after his car was set alight.

Chief Superintendent Jim Trotman was suspended and released on bail until April 8 following his arrest last month.

A spokeswoman for the force said the officer was also held on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and perverting the course of justice.

The arrest was made by officers from the Professional Standards Department.

Chief Supt Trotman began his policing career in Reading before joining Thames Valley Police in 1992.

He served as a staff officer to the then Chief Constable, Sir Charles Pollard, before taking on the West Berkshire Basic Command Unit and subsequently the post of police commander for Oxford.

He most recently headed up the strategic development department at the force.
