Review looks to shape the future of police leadership
The police leadership commission is calling on anyone interested in police leadership to share their views and opinions.
Set up by the College of Policing with the support of the Home Office, the police leadership commission is conducting a comprehensive review of police leadership to ensure policing can meet evolving challenges and public expectations.
Chaired by former Home Secretary Lord Blunkett and former Policing Minister Lord Herbert of South Downs, the commission brings together experts from policing, the military, the private sector and academia to identify best practice and learning from across different sectors.
The commission welcomes a diverse range of opinions and recognises this is a “pivotal moment” to strengthen police leadership.
“Future leaders need to be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to face upcoming challenges and deliver a trusted service that cuts crime and keeps people safe,” it said.
“You may already work, or have worked in policing, be a partner who collaborates with the police service, or a member of the public who cares about policing in your community. Different viewpoints from across all sections of society will help create a blueprint for police leadership that truly serves everyone.”
The call for evidence is open until Thursday February 12, 2026.
The commission will carefully analyse all responses alongside other evidence being gathered. Findings and recommendations will be presented to the Home Secretary in May 2026.
The commission aims to provide a blueprint for police leadership that restores public confidence and ensures the service can meet the needs of communities for decades to come.
