A scheme to issue publicans and shopkeepers with radios that allow them to contact the police directly could be rolled out to Neighbourhood Watch (NW) members.

The scheme was successfully used in Ryde Shopwatch and Pubwatch on the Isle of Wight and allowed managers to speak to each other and to police, to highlight shoplifters and troublemakers.

Hampshire Constabulary said that the best way to combat problems is to help people help them – and part of that is to make NW members more proactive and tell them when they spot anti-social behaviour.
