Serial killer Dale Cregan, who murdered two unarmed police officers, is trying to win £20,000 in compensation after claiming two prison van crashes gave him whiplash injuries.

Cregan – given a whole life term for shooting officers Fiona Bone, 32, and 23-year-old Nicola Hughes in 2012 – claims he was hurt in separate accidents as guards drove him from Strangeways Prison in Manchester to Preston Crown Court for his murder trial.

Cregan, 32, went on the run after killing father and son David and Mark Short in a Manchester bar fight.

He then lured the two officers into a house – before unleashing 32 shots in 31 seconds and throwing a grenade at the unprotected officers.

The whiplash claim, which outraged politicians and police alike and could end up costing taxpayers £100,000, is being made after Cregan allegedly heard wardens discussing their compensation pay-outs for the accidents, the Sun reports.

Monmouth MP David Davies, a former special constable, said if any prisoner’s claim is successful the cash should go into a special account for crime victims – who could then sue prisoners for the problems they have caused.

Ian Hanson, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Federation, declined to comment on the whiplash claims. “He doesn’t exist as far as we are concerned,” he said.

A Prison Service spokesperson told the Sun: “We defend all claims as far as evidence allows.”
