He will lead on pay negotiations with the Government and play an integral role in setting the strategic direction for more than 145,000 members.

Mr Partington brings a wealth of experience to the role. He began his policing career in 1996, becoming inspector in 2005.

He said: “It’s an honour to be appointed as national secretary at such a pivotal time for policing.

“Pay and conditions are rightly at the forefront of our members’ concerns, and I’m committed to continuing our strong, evidence-based negotiations with government that reflect the value, professionalism and sacrifices of our officers. They deserve nothing less.”

Mukund Krishna, PFEW CEO, said: “I’m delighted to welcome John Partington as our new national secretary. His proven leadership in representing our members and negotiating on their behalf as we continue to make the strong case to government about pay and conditions.

“I look forward to working closely with him to secure the fair recognition our members deserve.”
