Passenger dies after pursuit leads to collision
A 23-year-old man has died after a car that was being pursued by officers collided with a lamppost.
Lancashire Constabulary has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as the vehicle had been requested to stop and was being followed prior to the collision.
The silver Mazda 6 containing three men was driving away from officers when it collided with the lamppost on Colne Road in Burnley at around 1.25am on Saturday (September 29).
The front seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 26-year-old back seat passenger sustained back and leg injuries.
The 24-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He has since been released under investigation.
Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Ashton said: “Our thoughts are with the families of these men at this incredibly difficult time. We have specially trained officers supporting them.”
