Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin will in turn become temporary deputy chief constable during this period.

In a statement, Nottinghamshire Police said: “Chief Constable Kate Meynell is currently away from work while she undergoes treatment for cancer.

“In her absence, police and crime commissioner Gary Godden has asked Deputy Chief Constable Steve Cooper to step up with immediate effect as the temporary chief constable.”

Ms Meynell took the reins at Nottinghamshire Police in December 2022, returning to the force where she began and spent most of her career. Previously she was deputy chief constable at Derbyshire Constabulary.

Mr Cooper became deputy chief constable in July 2022, and was responsible for Corporate Services and the Professional Standards Department.

He started his policing career with the Metropolitan Police Service, where he worked within both uniformed policing and CID, before transferring to Nottinghamshire Police in 2001.
