West Mercia Police Authority today (December 16) confirmed the appointment of Simon Chesterman as the force’s new deputy chief constable (DCC).

Mr Chesterman has served as temporary DCC since David Shaw became chief constable in August.

He joined West Mercia Police as assistant chief constable in charge of specialist operations in 2007, moving from Thames Valley Police, and also had experience of being a temporary DCC in 2008.

Chairman of the Authority Sheila Blagg said the force’s reputation and performance in serious and organised crime has “dramatically improved” on Mr Chesterman’s watch and added he has proved himself up to the task during his temporary appointment.

“He has demonstrated the professionalism we want and need from our police leaders and is absolutely trusted to deliver in this post,” said Ms Blagg.

Mr Shaw said he was delighted Mr Chesterman had got the job.

“His appointment to this post is a critical one for the force at this time of unprecedented change,” the chief constable said.

“I know he is held in the highest regard by the workforce and his ability to build positive relationships within the service and with other partners will be key as the force addresses crime, disorder and the spending challenges in the months and years ahead.”
