As part of the new uniform, officers will be kitted out with black fleece tops, blouson-style fluorescent jackets and more functional trousers.

Additional changes include the re-introduction of flat caps for traffic officers and ties instead of cravats for female police officers.

The white helmet has become an internationally recognised symbol of the Manx force, and Deputy Chief Constable Gary Roberts said: “We have preserved the use of the white helmet, which is seen as being symbolic of the Isle of Man Constabulary.

“Maintaining our identity is crucially important.”

  • Students from the London College of Fashion will find out which of their designs will be chosen to shape a new uniform for the Metropolitan Police. The force will select winning entries from eight finalists this week. It has been working with the students over the last few months to develop “practical” concepts.
