West Yorkshire Police has unveiled plans to develop a multi-million pound specialist training facility at its Carr Gate site in Wakefield, currently home to the forces Operations Division including the police helicopter and the mounted and dogs sections.
The new buildings will be used to deliver specialist operational training for officers working across the county including public order, firearms and driver training. Such training is currently delivered at a number of venues around the force, and the planned development is intended to improve efficiency and be cost effective.
The new buildings will also provide a base for police resources, taking advantage of Carr Gates motorway links to enable officers and equipment to be deployed speedily to incidents across the county.
Superintendent John Cocliff, Head of the Forces Training and Development, said: West Yorkshire Police needs to expand its existing training facilities to meet the challenges and developments of policing in the 21st Century. The planned development will enhance the facilities already at Carr Gate and reinforces the commitment to police training in Wakefield with further investment taking place at Bishopgarth.
Chief Superintendent Dick Rothwell, Head of the Forces Operations Division based at Carr Gate, said: The plans have been carefully put together to ensure minimum impact on residents in nearby communities and will ensure that we continue to deliver a high quality service to the people of West Yorkshire.
