BT is to provide police officers and staff at the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) with new identity and access management services.

The five-year deal, signed by BT Global Services and the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA), is designed to help the MPS increase the security of its buildings and computer systems.

The deal will involve the roll out of 80,000 Microsoft Windows-compatible smartcards and around 140,000 readers, which will control access to the MPS’ buildings and IT systems.

“Through this contract, we aim to enhance security and risk management, as well as introduce more efficient IT processes and new ways of working at the MPS,” said Catherine Crawford, MPA chief executive.

BT will integrate existing components into the new identity and access management systems.

Mike Blackburn, director for central government and home affairs at BT Global Services, said: “Integrated physical and IT security is becoming ever more important in today’s society. By converging both physical and logical security, organisations have the ability to tighten security, audit users for compliance and deliver operational efficiencies.”

BT Global Services’ Security Practice will work with the MPS to roll out the new systems.

The Security Practice provides a range of consultancy and services in secure networking, business continuity, risk and compliance management and identity and access management.
