Hampshire Constabulary has appointed Sara Glen as permanent deputy chief constable.

The appointment is believed to be the first time the chief constable and deputy chief constable roles in a force have been filled by female officers.

Ms Glen, who previously held the role on a temporary basis, was confirmed in her new role by a meeting of the Hampshire police and crime panel earlier this month.

Her appointment follows Olivia Pinkney’s selection as the force’s first female chief constable in February.

Ms Glen joined Hampshire Constabulary as head of crime in 2012.

Two years later she was appointed temporary assistant chief constable for crime and criminal justice, with strategic oversight for all aspects of investigations.

In 2015, she was appointed assistant chief constable on a permanent basis.

Prior to joining the force, Ms Glen – who leads the bilateral Digital Policing Programme for both Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police – served with Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Dorset Police.

Deputy Chief Constable, Sara Glen said: “I have served at every rank from being a constable, patrolling on the streets of Hampshire to Assistant Chief Constable.

“I promise to serve the public, and the staff and officers of Hampshire Constabulary, to the best of my ability for the next five years and I’m looking forward to getting on with the job.”

Hampshire police and crime commissioner Michael Lane said: “I’m delighted that after a testing selection process our new deputy chief constable is to be Sara Glen. She brings both a deep understanding of the force and insight into what our future needs will be.”

Ms Pinkney tweeted she was “delighted” Ms Glen had accepted her new role.
