Leicestershire Police chief constable joins Sentencing Council on interim basis
The Lord Chancellor has approved the interim appointment of Leicestershire Police Chief Constable Rob Nixon as a policing member of the Sentencing Council.
He will remain as a member of the council until November 30, pending the outcome of a recruitment campaign for the role.
As part of his responsibilities, Mr Nixon will help in developing sentencing guidelines and monitoring their use.
He will also be involved in assessing the impact of guidelines on sentencing practice, and promoting the understanding of, and increasing public confidence in, sentencing and the criminal justice system.
Mr Nixon’s interim appointment was approved by Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk after consulting the Lord Chief Justice.
Mr Nixon was appointed chief constable of Leicestershire Police last November having served with the force since 1993. He had been temporary chief constable since the departure of Simon Cole in March 2022.
The Sentencing Council was established under Section 118(1) of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 to promote greater transparency and consistency in sentencing, while maintaining the independence of the judiciary.
