Leicestershire DCC retires after 30 years

Deputy Chief Constable Mike Goodwin (left) of Leicestershire Constabulary retires today (Thursday) after 30 years police service. As of March, Mr Goodwin will be taking up the role of National Senior Careers Development Adviser with the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) for potential chief police officers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

He has also been selected, for the third consecutive year, to be a Syndicate Director on the National Police Strategic Command Course between January and March 2010.

Mr Goodwin said: “It has been a great honour to have been a chief officer in Leicestershire for the last eight years. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved in partnership with local colleagues. My retirement marks the end of 30 years continuous police service, including West Midlands Police and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).

“While I’m sad to be leaving I’m nevertheless delighted that I will be able to put my experience to good use in coaching and developing the chief police officers of the future. I’m also very proud to be selected once again to be a Syndicate Director. It’s great news that some of the leading-edge public sector leadership work here in Leicestershire will once again achieve both national and international exposure to the future leaders of the police service.”

Mr Goodwin began his policing career with the MPS in 1980, before moving onto West Midlands Police and finally Leicestershire Constabulary, where he led on the introduction of neighbourhood policing and was a driving force behind the innovative inter-agency public sector senior leadership programme ‘Leadership in Partnership’, launched in June 2009.
