Keith Bristow, the current chief constable of Warwickshire Police has been named the new head of the National Crime Agency (NCA).
The Home Office said this morning that Mr Bristow will head the new agency when it comes into force.
Home Secretary Theresa May said Mr Bristow will develop an agency of powerful, operational crime fighters.
Mr Bristow added: The NCA will protect communities and individuals from harm by tackling serious, organised and complex crime.
The NCA is due to be established in 2013 with the head leading the transition from the precursor agencies, the Serious Organised Crime Agency, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and elements of the National Policing Improvement Agency, which is due to be phased out by the end of 2012.
It is believed that four candidates went for the position after being shortlisted from nine applicants.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police Services Deputy Commissioner Tim Godwin, who is thought to have been one of the applicants, is expected to leave the force to seek new challenges in a think tank role.
