South Wales Police launched a knife crime-prevention DVD last week accompanied by boxing icon Joe Calzaghe.

The interactive and educational knife crime-prevention DVD contains a short documentary depicting the serious and traumatic repercussions of knife crime. It features young people from the local area and is the culmination of 18 months work.

Over 250 people attended the premiere screening in Cardiff Bay last week, including teenagers, youth workers, teachers and police officers. There were also live performances of two anti-knife crime raps written and produced by young musicians in South Wales.

Mr Calzaghe, who has supported the campaign, said: “For many people, life on the streets can be tough but the use of knives is not the answer. Taking part in activities such as sport mixes you in the right circles, and at the same time teaches you values of respect and discipline which will equip you well in life.”

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hurley, who led the project on behalf of South Wales Police, said: “In the forthcoming weeks, the distribution of 500 educational packs will take place throughout South Wales. This will raise awareness in relation to knife crime and educate and prevent those who are vulnerable within our community. Hopefully this educational tool will assist people such as youth workers to engage with those who are most vulnerable.”
