Following an application and interview process in which the temporary chief constable of Gwent Police was the only applicant, Jeff Farrar (right) has been announced as the proposed candidate to take up the role permanently.
The decision will be the subject of a confirmation hearing of the Gwent police and crime panel (PCP) on November 8.
Mr Farrar, who has served as a police officer for 29 years, joined Gwent Police from South Wales Police in 2009 having been appointed as assistant chief constable. He was then promoted to deputy chief constable in April 2011.
Gwent police and crime commissioner Ian Johnston said: I am delighted to nominate Jeff Farrar as my proposed candidate for chief constable. During the time I have worked with him he has proved himself to be a highly competent and effective officer, the kind of leader Gwent Police needs at this time.
Mr Johnston said that the interview process was no different to interviews where there is more than one candidate and was both formal and challenging.
The panel conducting the interview included the chief executives of Aneurin Bevan Health, Monmouthshire County Council, Wales Probation, the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers and an independent member.
[We] were all impressed with Jeffs presentation and the answers he gave in response to some challenging and difficult questions, said Mr Johnston. I will now commend his appointment to the PCP.
Mr Farrar added: I am honoured to have been chosen as the proposed candidate for the role of chief constable, and look forward to the opportunity to address the members of the PCP next month.
