Police in a tourism mecca have opened an investigation into a British man who suffered “death by humiliation”.

The homeless man was found tied to bench near Malaga’s busy airport terminal on Spain’s Costa del Sol with his trousers down and his genitals in a can of tuna.

The body of the man, named locally as Steven Allford, was discovered at 9am last Friday (October 21) by a security guard just yards from the airport’s railway station.

His hands and feet were fixed to a bench with plastic ties and his trousers were around his ankles, according to the local Malaga newspaper Diario Sur.

The man, who was known to be sleeping rough in the Malaga area and pushed his belonging around in a luggage trolley, also had a slice of ham placed on each buttock.

The investigation was launched after a post mortem revealed the 51-year-old had choked on his own vomit.

Local officers are investigating whether he died during a sex attack or if he was placed into the bizarre position after drinking too much and passing out “by a person or persons who thought it fun to humiliate him”.

A Foreign Office spokesperson could not confirm the identity of the victim, adding: “We are in contact with local authorities following reports of the death of a British man in Spain.”
