HM Inspector of Constabulary to lead Windrush review
An inspector of constabulary has been tasked with leading a review into how the Government treated Windrush migrants.
HM Inspector Wendy Williams will oversee the Windrush lessons learned review, the Home Office announced on Thursday (June 21).
Ms Williams, who usually works for Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services, will be responsible for examining the reasons why Caribbean migrants were wrongly deported and what is needed to prevent similar actions in the future.
A dedicated Windrush taskforce established in April has already provided documentation to more than 2,000 people to demonstrate their right to live in the UK.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid said: “The contribution that the Windrush generation have made to this country is invaluable and I am committed to putting things right.
“I am delighted that Wendy will be overseeing the lessons learned review, which is vital to ensuring this never happens again to any group of people.
“She has a wealth of experience and I am confident that she will bring integrity to the review and give it the external scrutiny it requires.”
Ms Williams said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the Independent Assessor of the Windrush Lessons Learned Review, and will bring to the role not just energy and commitment, but also an extensive legal background and significant experience in scrutinising public bodies on behalf of the public.
“It is critical that this review enables us to understand how so many people who have brought so much to this country came to be treated as they were.
“The dignity shown by the Windrush Generation over the last few months has been humbling. In response, the very least we can do is undertake a comprehensive review that will not only provide them with much needed reassurance, but which will also seek to ensure that lessons are learned for the future.”
