A new group has been set up by Greater Manchester Police Authority’s (GMPA). Scrutiny Committee to strengthen the way police stop and search powers are monitored.

The Stop and Search Policy Working Group will study the way powers are used to ensure fairness and legality.

“We have always worked hard, not only to fulfil our legal duties, but to exceed them wherever possible,” said Majid Hussain, GMPA’s lead member for race and diversity.

“Forming this new group is just another step in addressing any issues that may arise from the way the powers are used.”

The issues the working group will work on include closely monitoring apparent disproportional use of the powers and ensuring members of the public are made aware of their rights if they are subject to a stop or search.
