Greater Manchester Police has appointed Ian Pilling as its new deputy chief constable.

Mr Pilling, who is currently assistant chief constable at Merseyside Police, will replace Ian Hopkins who was recently appointed chief constable following the departure of Sir Peter Fahy.

Mr Pilling joined Lancashire Constabulary in 1990 and has worked in predominantly uniform roles across three forces.

In his present role he is responsible for covering criminal justice, custody, calls and control rooms.

Prior to that, he was commander for the Sefton area of Merseyside.

Mr Pilling, who is the national policing lead for vulnerable adults, said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity but I don’t underestimate the challenges ahead. I know we can find a way forward if the police, partners and public pull together.”

Mr Hopkins said: “I am delighted to be able to appoint Ian Pilling. He has extensive operational experience. Ian will be a strong addition to my team and will help me lead Greater Manchester Police through the very challenging times we face.”

Greater Manchester Mayor and police and crime commissioner Tony Lloyd said: “Ian Pilling was chosen from a strong field of candidates. Both Ian`s background and experience will be a huge asset to Greater Manchester Police and the people of Greater Manchester.”
