Gloucestershire Constabulary has appointed a new deputy chief constable.

Rod Hansen (right), who is currently assistant chief constable at neighbouring Avon and Somerset Constabulary, was one of two candidates interviewed for the role. His appointment, which is subject to clearance and a medical, will see the temporary deputy chief constable, Kevin Lambert, return to his previous position as assistant chief constable.

Mr Hansen joined Avon and Somerset Constabulary in September 1988, beginning in Chipping Sodbury before becoming a sergeant in Bath and a patrol inspector in central Bristol. As part of his role as assistant chief constable with the force, he is responsible for Specialist Operations, Headquarters CID and the Intelligence Directorate, as well as the south west Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Unit (CTIU) and other of regional organisations.

The present lead for the National Mounted Police Working Group for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), Mr Hansen is also the chief police adviser to the military Joint Task Force Headquarters (JTFHQ) and part of a multi-agency team of non-military advisers. Working closely with colleagues from various governmental and charitable groups, he has been deployed to Somalia, Kenya and Uganda, among others, to assist counter-terrorism and other initiatives in the Horn of Africa.

Gloucestershire Constabulary Chief Constable Suzette Davenport said: “It was a rigorous selection process with two highly able candidates but Rod’s depth of experience in policing generally and the extent of his collaborative working was evident, and he will bring significant value to the Constabulary.”
