Victims of domestic violence in Kent and Medway will now have access to legal representation 24-hours-a-day throughout the year thanks to collaboration between Kent Police and the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV).

Launched on Monday at Kent Police College, the partnership is designed to protect victims and their families from domestic abuse. The NCDV gives free legal advice and representation to victims, helping them to obtain court injunctions to protect them from their abusers.

Officers at Kent Police, in particular the public protection units, will be able to refer victims to the NCDV for advice.

Attending the launch Steve Connor, NCDV’s chief executive officer, said: “The new partnership with Kent Police will give anyone living in Kent needing legal advice or an injunction fast access to our service, which is free to all regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or financial circumstances.

“By standing together, we will send out a message that this horrific crime will not be tolerated and that we will work to bring abusers to justice.”

As well as legal advice, the NCDV centre is able to offer assistance at court using a ‘McKenzie Friend’ to accompany victims throughout the proceedings free of charge.
