Cambridgeshire police are handing out 800 drug- testing kits to help combat date-rape.

The credit-card sized kits are being distributed in Peterborough to pub and club customers.

The kits allow users to check if drinks in pubs or clubs contain so-called date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or Ketamine.

The force believes it is the first to distribute testing kits in this way.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokeswoman said: “officers patrolling the city centre will carry the kits and will give them to anyone who asks for one.

If the scheme proves successful it may be widened to other parts of the county.

The spokeswoman said: “We are becoming increasingly concerned and aware of what is commonly known as date rape crimes.

“We have 800 kits and we will see how popular the scheme is and how fast they go, then review the position.

“We’re not only looking at women being victims – and we’re not only looking at sexual crimes.

“There can be situations where people are drugged and then have money or valuables taken.”
