Former member of police staff fined for unlawful access of police systems
A former member of Police Scotland staff has received a £1,650 fine plus a £75 victim surcharge at Greenock Sheriff Court for the unlawful access of police systems while in her previous role at the force’s Criminal Justice Services Division.
Joanna Miller, 32, previously pleaded guilty to 22 charges under the Data Protection Act on May 20, 2025.
The offences include 18 charges of accessing police records without legitimate policing purpose, and four charges relating to obtaining and disclosing personal information.
The crimes took place over a three-year period between November 2020 and November 2023 when she was responsible for providing an administrative function updating records on various police systems and databases.
Ms Miller resigned from Police Scotland prior to the conclusion of criminal proceedings.
Chief Superintendent Helen Harrison, head of Professional Standards said: “Joanna Miller exploited her position by accessing police systems to view records she had no business purpose for seeing.
“As an organisation, we know how much damage can be caused to public trust and confidence by those police officers and staff who fail to uphold the high standards we expect in policing and that the public rightly deserve.
“This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated; we will always investigate complaints against police officers and staff who fail to uphold our values and standards.”
