Former GMP chief dies

Sir David Wilmot, the former chief constable of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), has died.

Sir David Wilmot, the former chief constable of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), has died.

Sir David, who began his career as a police cadet with Lancashire Constabulary in the 1950s, passed away suddenly on June 13 following a short illness.

Sir David enjoyed a distinguished career with the police and following his initial service with Lancashire Constabulary, he joined the newly formed Merseyside Police in 1974. He then moved to West Yorkshire Police as its assistant chief constable in 1983, before working his way up to the force’s deputy chief constable position.

Sir David ended his career with GMP, where he was appointed chief constable in 1991.

His dedication was recognised with a Queen’s Police Medal in 1989. Sir David was knighted in 2002, the year of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, before retiring later in the same year.
