Forces recognised for supporting employees who are unpaid carers
An award that celebrates employers which support their employees who are also unpaid carers, has been jointly presented to Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH) police forces.
The three forces are the first nationally to receive the ‘Carer Friendly Tick Award – Employers’ from the charity Caring Together.
To achieve accreditation, employers must provide a named lead for carers, raise awareness of carers’ issues and rights, educate managers and provide clear information and support.
Deputy Chief Constable Dan Vajzovic, BCH equality, diversity and inclusion lead, said: “I am delighted that the three forces’ hard work in this area has been acknowledged through our Carer Friendly Tick accreditation.
“Being a carer can be challenging, particularly when fitting these responsibilities around work. This is an issue that is close to my heart as I have a son who is deaf.
“It is incredibly important for employers to recognise that being a carer does not mean they are less capable or committed to doing a good job. On the contrary, their additional responsibilities are likely to have equipped them with many other valuable skills, such as the ability to listen, advocate, problem-solve, multi-task and negotiate.
“The three forces recognise this and are committed to ensuring carers feel valued and are supported to carry out their roles to the best of their ability.”
The three forces’ accreditation runs until February 2026, after which, evidence must be submitted to demonstrate their continued commitment to colleagues who are also unpaid carers.
The Carer Friendly Tick Award scheme is run by Caring Together Charity, which aims to ensure no unpaid carer is in crisis, isolated or left to struggle alone.
